About the University
The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a public research institution in Norwich, England. The university, which was founded in 1963 and is located on a 320-acre (130-hectare) campus west of the city center, comprises four faculties and 26 schools of study. In 2021, the university had an undergraduate offer rate of 85.1%, and its yearly income for 2021–2022 was £295.5 million, of which £30.2 million came from grants and contracts for research.
Three Nobel Prize winners, a Hepatitis C and Hepatitis D genome discoverer, a lead developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, one Royal Society President, and at least 48 Fellows of the Royal Society are all UEA alumni and faculty. Alumni also include leaders of state, government, and intergovernmental agencies, as well as three Booker Prize-winning novelists.
In 2000 UEA’s reputation within the field of environmental research led to the government choosing the institution as the site for the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. The John Tyndall Science Centre brings together researchers from eight partner institutions including scientists, economists, engineers, and social scientists.
Princess Anne officially launched Norwich’s multi-sports facility, the Sportspark, in 2001. The Sportspark was funded in part by a £14.5 million grant from the Sport England Lottery Fund. The Sportspark has Norfolk’s biggest climbing wall, an Olympic-sized pool, and floodlit astroturf fields. Sir Paul Nurse, UEA alumni, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine that same year. Along with Timothy Hunt and Leland Hartwell, he shared the award “for their discoveries of essential regulators of the cell cycle”.
With 110 students enrolled, UEA’s Medical School opened its doors in 2002. The school works in tandem with the world-class research institutions now housed in the Norwich Research Park as well as the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Together with the Zuckerman Center for Connective Environmental Research, the School of Pharmacy debuted in 2003. (ZICER). Following a government consultation, the walkways, the Teaching Wall, and the Ziggurats were also given Grade II listed status.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 results, which were released on May 12, 2022, revealed that more than 91% of the university’s research activity was deemed to be “world-leading” or “internationally excellent,” with more than 47% falling into the top category of 4* of World Leading Research, which is significantly higher than the national average of 41%. UEA moved up nine spots since the previous evaluation in 2014 to be placed 20th overall among all major British institutions and 13th in the UK for the quality of its research outputs.
According to the Times Higher Education world rankings for 2015–16 and the Leiden Ranking for research excellence for 2016, the university is ranked in the top 1% globally and within the top 100 globally. APPLY HERE
